How Long Does Milk Last in the Fridge?
Opened milk lasts 5–7 days in the refrigerator when kept at or below 4°C. Unopened milk lasts until the printed date on the carton, and often 2–3 days beyond it if the fridge is cold enough.
Where you store milk matters as much as how long you keep it. The fridge door is the warmest part of the fridge — the temperature fluctuates every time you open it. Keep milk on a shelf at the back, not in the door.
Milk Shelf Life by Type
| Type | Unopened | After opening |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh (pasteurised) milk | Until printed date | 5–7 days |
| UHT / long-life milk | 2–3 months (pantry) | 5–7 days |
| Soy, oat & almond milk | Until printed date | 7–10 days |
| Raw (unpasteurised) milk | 5–7 days | 3–5 days |
Can You Freeze Milk?
Yes. Milk freezes well for up to 3 months in an airtight container. Leave room at the top — milk expands as it freezes. Thaw it in the fridge (never on the counter) and shake well before using, as the fat separates. Frozen-thawed milk is fine for cooking and baking, though the texture may change slightly for drinking.
Signs Milk Has Gone Bad
- Smell: a sour, sharp odour is the first and most reliable sign.
- Texture: lumpy, chunky or separated milk has spoiled.
- Taste: if in doubt, a tiny sip will tell you instantly — sour milk tastes unmistakably acidic.
When in doubt, throw it out. Sour milk can carry harmful bacteria even when it looks normal.
